Unlike most outdoor apparel companies, Icebreaker was actually started by accident. In 1994, Jeremy Moon, Icebreaker's founder came across a prototype for 100% merino Wool long underwear. The positive properties of the fabric amazed him. It was great in different weather conditions, and completely sustainable. It could be worn winter or summer. It was nothing like traditional wool. Where the conventional pieces were thick, scratchy, and unwieldy; the merino was soft, luxurious and best of all... it didn't itch. It was great at wicking sweat and very breathable. In 1995, Moon started Icebreaker. Moon thought right away that the material shouldn't be limited to long underwear, socks, and sweaters. Moon saw that it's fibers were able to keep merino sheep alive in the mountains all year long. Why couldn't we use it for our purposes? Soon, Icebreaker began to develop different weights of merino for different activities and climates. Icebreaker was evolving into a line that featured pieces that were versatile and functional. Icebreaker is now distributed in 30 countries worldwide, and is known as one of the leading brands in the merino market. Icebreaker retains their comittment to sustainability by fostering socially and environmentally ethical conditions for manufacturing the wool they use. Only ethically sound companies are contracted to be a part of their manufacturing process. Use of hand sheared wool and a refusal to use wool from sheep that have been mulesed are two ways that Icebreaker helps to maintain a sustainable environment. Merino is a renewable protein based fiber. It will compost if buried in your backyard! Icebreaker uses only the best New Zealand merino available, which is laser scanned to ensure acceptable durability and strength. Icebreaker also contracts with farmers, long term to ensure profitability for farmers and ensure quality materials. They have helped boost New Zealand's merino market by purchasing about 20% of the merino produced in the country. It's about our relationship to nature and to each other.... this is Icebreaker's mantra. It is reflected in their products and we're very happy to carry them.
